Numerous cruises depart the city every year and just as many ships visit as part of a British Isles cruise itinerary. National Express runs scheduled coach services to Southampton from London (Waterloo Station), Heathrow, Gatwick and most major cities. This is the cheapest way to get to Southampton, with single tickets as low as £9.80 in off-peak times. Cruisers can book a transfer from London to the Southampton cruise port ready for a cruise vacation. The port also handles bulk cargo including perishable food and produce, wheat, rock, gravel, fertiliser, grains and scrap.

It is estimated that every visiting cruise ship brings around GBP 2 million to the city's economy. Remember to pre-book cruise parking to get the best rates and be sure of a space when you arrive. These companies are either a short walk from the cruise terminals or offer a complimentary shuttle bus to take you and your luggage to and from the ship. The unusual tidal flow provides 17 hours per day or rising water with a modest range of about 1.5 metres or 5 feet.

The season was marked by ~2,6 million cruise tourists handled during 460 ship calls. On April 20, 2015, the RCI-Royal Caribbean ship Anthem of the Seas was officially named in Southampton. The christening ceremony was led by the godmother Emma Wilby (British travel agent). On May 3, 2015, Cunard Line's 175th Anniversary Celebrations were held in the cruise port. The special event was attended by all three Cunard liners - Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria.

For the project was contracted Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure, with scheduled completion by June 2019. For season 2018, MSC Cruises scheduled an extended itinerary program with more regular departures from the UK. The company intends to homeport here one of its newer (bigger) ships. The port (all its facilities) is managed by ABP (London-headquartered corporation) that owns 21x UK seaports and manages ~1/4th of Britain's sea-shipping trade.

There are always taxi’s outside the main entrance to the station. Cost is around £6 to £9, but may cost more on weekends and bank holidays. Bollards are quayside vertical posts used for mooring (lines). Terminal's building was redesigned and significantly improved and increased (as passenger capacity). In mid-June 2021, ABP Southampton installed an airbridge (GBP 5 million / EUR 5,8M) at Berth 102 (Horizon Terminal). The 235-tonne airbridge (jetway) was custom-built (to automatically adjust with the tide).

There are also a couple of vending machines and souvenirs (T-shirts, mugs and fridge magnets) to buy, but little else. For passengers travelling with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Lines and MSC Cruises there's self-parking available right next to City Cruise Terminal (less than a minute walk away). It is a much cleaner and more efficient system, significantly reducing pollution and improving the eco-friendly operations of each cruise ship.

Look for signs saying "Assisted Boarding" and staff wearing orange tabards with "Mobility Assistance" written on their backs. They will escort you in a wheelchair all the way from check-in through security and onto the ship. The car parking service on offer for each cruise will depend on your cruise line operator and your departure and arrival terminal.

Of course, how far you can go and what you can do will depend on how long you are in port. They are all relatively close together and as you enter the city by car, there is ample signage to point you in the right direction. Sailing UK waters is hugely popular with cruisers from across the globe and ship choice is just as varied. If you cruise out of Southampton cruise terminal, you can see this vast refinery on the starboard side before you reach the Solent.

As ferry port, Southampton serves ~3 million passengers to and from Isle of Wight. It was in this establishment that crew members from the Titanic came for a glass or two before the ship set sail. Legend has it that some crew members drank so much that they ended up missing the ship's departure, which of course saved their lives. While there isn't a direct train from Heathrow to Southampton, there are hourly direct trains from Gatwick to Southampton Central train station, which takes around two hours.

Port Southampton is managed by the Southampton Port Authority. When busy, the Fruit Shed (Berth 104) is used as a temporary measure. The cruise port handles over 500 ships calls and accommodates more than 2 million cruise passengers in additional to serving another 3 million passengers heading to and from the Isle of Wight. For 2017, the cruise port reported a record-breaking year with over 2 million cruise passengers.

You can also take the Underground from Heathrow to London Waterloo and board a train there to Southampton. The journey from London to Southampton is pretty straightforward, although there is no direct train route. You can take one train from London Heathrow to London Paddington and then a train from there to Southampton.
